3 good reasons to get a massage

23 Apr 2018

In order to celebrate our partnership with Vaniday, we have decided to write an article that changes a bit from what you we are used to. What better topic to fit both our area of expertise than massages!

Massages have been known to have many medical benefits. But is that really true? Do massages have any effects on your body except for relaxing it?

Medical massages have an effect on the skin, the muscles, the tendons and the ligaments. The effects are quite diverse. Acting like a pain relief, it also soothes anxiety and the risk of depression. In addition to boosting the immune system, massages can improve sleep, digestion and blood circulation.

1) When should you consider getting a massage?

As Chris Woolston mentioned it in his article about pain relief, a survey made by the American Massage Therapy Association revealed that “about 25 percent of adults had had a massage at least once in the past 12 months, and 50 percent used massage therapy for health-related reasons, such as relief for pain or stiffness.”

A) Sport massages

Indeed, massages are not only used for relaxation. Sometimes seen as a “luxury treatment”, a pain relief massage can really be useful and helps to relax the body. For athletes that are professionals, this is usually part of their training. Furthermore, it can be used to recover faster after a training session or a competition.

A sport massage is a combination of several types of massages. It helps the body recover quicker, and it also been shown to improve your performance. As it is considered as a “clinical” massage, each sport related massage is adapted to each person. Therefore, you will not receive the same as your team players or your coach.

Massages will allow the muscles to relax after the effort and will help the athlete to recover faster. Muscles that have been massaged recover faster than muscles who have only rested after the exercise session. During a competition, massages can also be done prior to a sport activity, in order to release stress, and prepare the muscles. From that point of view, a massage is also a way to improve an athlete’s performances.

B) Post-natal : the Jamu massage

The Jamu massage is a Javanese tradition, typical of the Indonesian medicine. It is traditionally made with little bags that are filled with herbs extracted from natural elements such as flowers, roots, leaves, fruits… There also exists different types who use hot stones and oils.

These elements stimulate the body, using techniques such as acupressure, aromatherapy and massage therapy. It will increase the blood circulation and provide a feeling of well-being.

Some recommend this massage after giving birth to help young mothers as it eliminates toxins and reduces water retention in the body. It will also improve blood circulation and help recover after giving birth.

C) Postsurgical rehabilitation

Massages can have an important effect when recovering from a surgery. They can help patients get back on their feet after the body has been through so much. First of all, massages can reduce pain after a surgery.

According to the Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals, massages can also promote tissue regeneration and reduce post surgical adhesions and swelling. Massages can help clear the fluid cellular wastes that cause the swelling. Some special messages like the lymphatic drainage massage can help with this issus. In addition, massages promote proper blood and oxygen flow that is required for tissue regeneration.

Furthermore, massages can help muscles and joints to regain flexibility and mobility faster, as they can be quite stiff after a surgery.

2) What effects on your body?

Massages can have various effects on our body. However, do you know what exactly happens to your body during a massage?

When your body is being massaged, it reacts in very different ways. There are two types of responses:

3) Where to go for a massage in Singapore?

Nevertheless, don’t forget that massages are not entirely risk-free. When badly executed, it can cause injuries like nerve damage. For people suffering from skin problems like eczema, irritation or any types of infection, we strongly recommend to avoid getting a massage. In that case, better leave the skin to rest and limit contact with the skin. In order to make your massage a wonderful experience, you should really consider choosing a qualified therapist, with quite a few years of experience.

Now you have no more excuses to go have a massage and relax your body! Boost your sport performances, relax your body after giving birth, recover of a medical surgery! We have a list of recommended massage therapist, provided by our partner, Vaniday:
