Crowns, scaling, cavities… the dental healthcare, in addition to be quite painful, are usually quite expensive!
As you are one of the many to ask us questions on this subject, we have written this article to help you to have a better understanding on the dental healthcare in Singapore.
1) How does the dental coverage work?
As a matter of fact, just like the maternity and optical coverages, the dental coverage is also considered as an option at UEX. This means that you, at least, need a basic coverage to subscribe to a dental insurance.
Please note that a dental coverage is only accessible if you have at least a coverage for inpatient and outpatient.
2) Make a clear distinction between the routine coverage and the coverage in the event of an accident
The reimbursement of your dental cares by your health insurance can depends on the context.
In the event of an accident
At UEX, if you need a medical intervention after an accident, the reimbursement will depend on your coverage:
- Base Plan 1: up to S$5,000
- Base Plan 2: up to S$8,000
Please note that these amounts are annual limits.
For Base Plan 3 and 4, there is no sub-limit. The reimbursement is done based on your annual limit in terms of inpatient healthcare:
- Base Plan 3: annual limit up to S$3,000,000
- Base Plan 4: annual limit up to S$4,000,000
In the event of a hospitalization, you will not need to subscribe to a dental coverage to be covered. However, please note that the treatment must be done 30 days following the accident for the reimbursement to occur.
Routine dental care
If you have scheduled an appointment at the dentist for a routine care, the additional dental option will have you covered. This option must be added to your basic coverage when you subscribe to your health insurance.
At UEX, for Base Plan 1 and 2, you have the choice between two levels of coverages:
- Level 1: S$500
- Level 2: S$1,000
For Base Plan 3 and 4, you can also choose between two levels of coverages:
- Level 2: S$1,000
- Level 3: S$2,500
Please note that these amounts are all annual limits. To give you a better idea of the prices for dental care in Singapore, impacted wisdom tooth at Changi General Hospital costs approximately S$876 per tooth.

We hope you now have a better understanding on the dental coverage and the dental healthcare system in Singapore. However, make sure you access your need before purchasing a dental coverage. Sometime it is more cost effective to allocate part of your budget directly to dental care rather than a dental coverage.
A dental coverage that reimburses high amounts can sometimes double your health insurance premium. However, considering your real need, it is not always necessary to purchase an insurance for your dental procedures.
